Have you ever been thrown off course by life's unexpected twists? Much like my recent travel debacle, which involved delays and tech issues, integrity professionals often encounter unforeseen challenges.
This experience highlights a crucial lesson: preparation is our greatest anticipation.
A clear roadmap is essential, whether you're starting an investigation, handling an appeal, or revising a policy. These plans, while initially time-consuming, provide direction and help maintain focus, preventing detours and inefficiencies.
Maybe you've heard of the 1 in 60 rule? It reportedly comes from aviation and goes like this: for every 1 degree you are off course, you will end up being 1 mile off course after traveling 60 miles. In other words, getting just 1 degree off course at the start will result in you straying further away from your destination or goal every mile travelled.
The roadmap ensures you start off in the right direction and stay the course. In practice, they should be flexible to adapt to new information and scenarios, much like a pilot adjusting their course around a storm to reach the intended destination both accurately and safely.
