According to UNHCR, by the end of 2023 there were over 117 million forcibly displaced persons in the world including 43.4 million refugees. With several deadly conflicts raging this year, these numbers are expected to rise dramatically in 2024.
As we honor World Refugee Day, it's crucial to spotlight the dark underbelly of integrity misconduct that aggravates the plight of refugees. From fueling conflicts to exploiting vulnerable populations, fraud, corruption and SEA have far-reaching impacts on those forced to flee their homes.
Corruption doesn’t just affect economies — it fuels conflicts, exacerbating the crises that displace millions. When funds meant for development are siphoned off, it can lead to social unrest and armed conflicts, pushing people to seek safety elsewhere. Fraud and corruption in climate finance projects can also exacerbate climate change impacts, creating more climate refugees as affected populations are left unprotected.
